Icacos Island, Puerto Rico: How to Get There, What to Bring & What to Expect
A practical guide to this island in the Cordillera Nature Reserve: boat excursions, beaches, snorkeling and responsible day-trip planning.

Places, stories and experiences
An island with no road leading to it
Off the coast of Fajardo, Icacos offers pale sand, clear blue water and coastal vegetation. The cay is part of the Cordillera Nature Reserve. Although it appears close to the mainland, the journey begins at a boat departure point—not a parking lot beside the beach. It has no permanent visitor facilities, and the natural setting is the attraction. Plan it as a daylight visit, leaving enough time to enjoy the shore and return under appropriate sea conditions.
Getting to Icacos from Fajardo
Icacos is reachable only by water. Visitors depart from the Fajardo area on water taxis, catamarans or other properly operated excursions. The length of the crossing varies with the departure point, vessel and sea conditions; confirm it with the selected maritime provider. This is not a public scheduled ferry like the routes to Culebra and Vieques. Before purchasing, confirm the exact dock, check-in time, itinerary, return arrangements and what the fare includes. See the Fajardo marina area on Google Maps.
Catamaran or water taxi?
A catamaran excursion often provides a structured schedule and may include equipment, drinks or food, depending on the package. A water taxi can support a more independent visit, but the return pickup and daily supplies need particular attention. Do not assume every outing includes a beach landing, guided snorkeling or the same amount of time ashore. Choose according to your group, the sea conditions and the kind of day you want.
What the island is like
The beach and surrounding waters invite swimming, relaxing and observing marine life when conditions allow. Some trips offer snorkeling, but the reefs and seafloor are fragile ecosystems: do not touch corals, feed fish or crowd wildlife. Visibility changes with waves and suspended sand. Clear or seemingly calm water should never be treated as a blanket guarantee of safe swimming.
No facilities: pack accordingly
Discover Puerto Rico identifies Icacos as an island without restrooms, restaurants, shops or shelter. Bring drinking water, food if it is not included, sun protection, a hat, a towel and supplies for the return journey. Take all trash back with you. For children or travelers who need additional assistance, ask about boarding, shade, life jackets and restroom access on the vessel before booking.
Pairing Icacos with other destinations
If you want to combine a daytime Icacos outing with something else in Fajardo, anchor the plan around the boat’s confirmed return time. Las Croabas and Laguna Grande may fit another portion of the trip, but a nighttime bioluminescent bay excursion is a separate reservation with different timing. For many travelers, one main water activity with breathing room for food and rest makes a better day.
Planning ground transportation
Ground transportation ends at the dock or meeting location confirmed by the boat provider. Island Ride PR can evaluate private ground transportation to an agreed marina or departure point, subject to availability. Boat fare, island access and on-water activities are not automatically included in a ground ride. Provide the operator name and precise meeting instructions before requesting a quote.
Before you go
Check the marine forecast and confirm departure and meeting details with your operator.
